Overview

Moc Bai International Border Gate, located in Loi Thuan Commune, Ben Cau District, Tay Ninh Province, is the largest land border crossing in Southern Vietnam along the Vietnam-Cambodia border. Situated approximately 34km south of Tay Ninh city center, 61km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, and 167km southeast of Phnom Penh, it serves as a vital transit point on the Trans-Asia Highway. Connecting with the Bavet border gate (Cambodia), Moc Bai is renowned for its vibrant trade, tourism, and casino activities.

Opening Hours: The border gate is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM for shopping and sightseeing. However, immigration procedures typically conclude by 5:00 PM, so please plan your schedule accordingly if you intend to cross the border.

Check-in at the Cambodia Boundary Marker (Bavet Border Gate)

This special landmark is located on the road between Moc Bai and Bavet, officially marking the boundary between Vietnam and Cambodia. You will encounter this marker after completing exit procedures at Moc Bai and heading toward Cambodia’s Bavet gate.

The marker has two sides: the Vietnamese side features the National Emblem and the number 171, while the Cambodian side displays the iconic Angkor Wat temple. A simple photo here serves as a perfect memento of your journey into the "Kingdom of Wonder."

Note: While checking in is free, you must complete exit procedures at Moc Bai. Ensure you carry your ID card or Passport, and some USD or Cambodian Riel for entry fees and personal expenses in Cambodia.

On the way from Tay Ninh city center to Moc Bai, you can visit the Tay Ninh Night Market or traditional craft villages in Trang Bang and Go Dau to experience local life.

• Requirements: You must present your ID card or Passport to purchase duty-free goods. Keep your receipts for inspection if requested.
• Spending Limits: Duty-free purchases are capped at 500,000 VND ($20 USD) per person per day. Any amount exceeding this limit is subject to standard taxes.
• Restricted Goods: For alcohol or tobacco, you must be at least 18 years old, with a purchase limit of 100,000 VND per person per day.

Visit Phnom Penh – The Tourism Capital

Moc Bai is only about 170km from Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. You can travel there by motorbike, car, or bus. A bus trip from the border to Phnom Penh costs approximately $80 USD (around 2,000,000 VND).

Pro-Traveler Experience Tips

1. In principle, all vehicles dropping off passengers must stop and park outside the entrance gate of the border crossing area, and passengers will have to carry their own luggage and walk approximately 300 meters in an open area across a wide courtyard to reach the immigration area. There are quite a few people here who look like luggage carriers; however, you should negotiate the price clearly before hiring them, as the quoted price may be excessively high. After completing immigration procedures in the area, passengers will continue across a courtyard about 150 meters long, passing the fence separating the Vietnamese and Cambodian borders. From here to the immigration area of ​​the Bavet border crossing (Cambodia) is only about 300 meters.

2. Accuracy regarding documentation is non-negotiable. While "Visa on Arrival" is common at Bavet, I highly recommend securing a Cambodian E-visa at least three days before your trip. This allows you to bypass the visa-processing counter and head straight to the diplomatic or E-visa immigration lanes, saving you roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Expect to pay 900,000 VND ($36 USD) for the E-visa (inclusive of processing fees). If you are doing a "visa run" to renew your Vietnamese stay, ensure your new E-visa for Vietnam is printed and ready; digital copies are often not accepted by the border guards. Lastly, be wary of "helpers" who may approach you at the gates offering to "speed up" your stamps for a fee. For a trustworthy and elegant experience, always decline these offers and speak only with uniformed immigration officers. All official fees are clearly posted. For currency, while USD is widely accepted in Cambodia, having a few small denominations of Cambodian Riel or Vietnamese Dong is useful for the shuttle carts and refreshments at the border kiosks. Carry a high-quality portable charger, as the 5G signal can fluctuate in the border zone, draining your battery as your phone switches between networks.

3. Many tourists often choose Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as the starting point for their Indochina Peninsula tour. After exploring Ho Chi Minh City, they will cross into Cambodia via the Moc Bai border gate (Tay Ninh province). The distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Moc Bai is only 70km, approximately 2 hours by car depending on traffic conditions.
