Overview
Cai Rang Floating Market is located on the Hau River, near Cai Rang Bridge, in Can Tho City, Vietnam. It is the largest and most famous floating market in the Mekong Delta. Over 100 years old, it remains a vibrant centre of river life.
The unique feature is that everything happens on the water. Hundreds of wooden boats sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and local breakfast foods. Sellers hang samples of their goods on long bamboo poles (cay beo) so buyers can see from far away. Families live on their boats for generations, making the market a complete floating community. The atmosphere is most exciting in the early morning when the sun rises and the river becomes golden.
The ideal time to visit is during the dry season from May to October. Try to arrive between 6:00 and 7:30 AM when trade is the busiest. You should avoid the first two days of the Lunar New Year (Tet), when the market is closed.

Pro-Traveler Experience Tips
- Book your boat the night before: Do not wait until the morning. Ask your hotel reception or a local tour operator to book a private boat. A private boat (for 4-6 people) costs between 500,000 and 600,000 VND ($21.10 - $25.35) for a 2-3 hour tour including waiting time. This guarantees a seat and saves time.
- Negotiate the price before boarding: If you arrange a boat yourself at the pier, always agree on the total price and the duration of the tour before you step on the boat. Ask "Bao nhiêu?" (How much?) and confirm with a nod.
- Bring a light jacket: The boat ride to the market is long (30-40 minutes). The river breeze in the early morning can be surprisingly cool. A light windbreaker or a scarf will make the trip much more comfortable.
- Don't forget cash: Boat drivers and floating vendors only accept Vietnamese Dong. Bring small notes (20,000 and 50,000 VND). There are no ATMs on the river.
- Prepare for motion sickness: The boats are small and the water can be choppy. If you get motion sickness easily, take medicine before the trip and sit in the middle of the boat.
- Order breakfast on the water: A floating breakfast of Hu Tieu noodle soup is around 45,000 VND ($1.90). A simple bowl of vermicelli costs about 15,000 VND ($0.63). An iced coffee is about 25,000 VND ($1.05). You signal the food boats with a wave.
- Protect your electronics: The river is very close. Waves from passing boats can splash into your boat. Keep your camera and phone in a waterproof bag or a sealed plastic pouch.
- Tipping is not expected but appreciated: Boat drivers do not expect a tip. However, if you enjoyed the service, rounding up the fare or giving an extra 20,000 - 50,000 VND ($0.85 - $2.10) is a nice gesture that goes a long way.
