Dien Hai Citadel

The traffic on Điện Biên Phủ Street roars past, indifferent. Behind the iron gates, however, a different Da Nang exists – one of battered stone walls, shaded benches, and the quiet ghosts of soldiers. Children fly kites on the grassy ramparts. An old woman practices tai chi under a banyan tree. And five ancient cannons, pointed uselessly toward the river, remember a time when the enemy came by sea. This is Dien Hai Citadel, and it has earned its silence.

How to get there?

The citadel is located at 4 Dien Bien Phu Street, approximately 1.5 km west of the Han River Bridge. By private car or taxi, the journey from the city centre (Han Market area) takes 5 minutes and costs 30,000–45,000 VND (~1.25–1.90 USD) one way. By motorbike (rental 100,000–150,000 VND / ~4–6 USD per day), follow Trần Phú Street west, then turn left onto Điện Biên Phủ – the citadel's iron gate is on your right. By public bus, take Bus #1, #4, or #9 to the “Dien Bien Phủ” stop (fare 7,000 VND / ~0.30 USD) – it is a 300‑metre walk to the entrance. By xe ôm (motorbike taxi), negotiate 20,000–30,000 VND (~0.80–1.25 USD) one way. For cyclists, the ride is flat and takes 10 minutes from the Dragon Bridge; bicycle rental costs 50,000 VND (~2 USD) per day. The citadel has no official parking for cars; taxis can drop you at the gate, and motorbikes can park for free on the pavement along the southern wall.
