Important Information
How the Can Tho to Phnom Penh transfer works
Your private transfer uses two separate vehicles — one on each side of the border. Your first driver picks you up from your hotel in Can Tho (typical departure: 7:00–8:00 AM) and drives you to the Tinh Bien border gate on the Vietnamese side. Once you clear Vietnamese exit immigration, you walk approximately 350 meters across a flat, paved crossing to the Cambodian immigration building at Phnom Den. Your second driver — holding a sign with your name — will be waiting on the Cambodia side the moment you walk through. He then drives you directly to your hotel in Phnom Penh, with an estimated arrival of 2:00–3:30 PM depending on border traffic.
At the Tinh Bien – Phnom Den border: what to expect
The Tinh Bien (Vietnam) – Phnom Den (Cambodia) crossing is significantly less busy than the Moc Bai / Bavet gate used on the Ho Chi Minh City to Phnompenh route, which means shorter queues and a smoother experience. Border processing typically takes 30 to 60 minutes under normal conditions, though it can extend on public holidays. The 350-meter walk between the two administration buildings is flat and partly shaded — porters with trolleys are usually available if you have heavy luggage. Both the Vietnamese exit process and Cambodian entry process are straightforward provided your documents are in order.
Traveling with children — child seat availability
Child seats are available on request at small extra charge for the journey. To guarantee availability, request your child seat at the time of booking and specify your child's age and approximate weight so we can fit the correct seat type (infant, toddler, or booster). Please note that child seat regulations and availability on the Cambodian side of the transfer may vary depending on the local vehicle assigned — contact us in advance and we will do our best to arrange it for the full journey. Children occupy a full seat and count toward the passenger maximum of whichever vehicle type you select.
Traveling with pets
Small pets are welcome on the Can Tho to Phnom Penh private transfer, subject to the following conditions:
- Pet must travel in a carrier or crate at all times inside the vehicle. Open-carry pets are not permitted.
- Notify us at booking — undisclosed pets may be refused boarding at the driver's discretion.
- Pets are the full responsibility of the owner throughout the journey, including at the border crossing.
- Border crossing regulations: Both Vietnam and Cambodia require pets to have a valid veterinary health certificate and up-to-date rabies vaccination record. Cambodia additionally requires an import permit issued by the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture. These documents must be obtained well in advance — we strongly recommend contacting both the Vietnamese and Cambodian veterinary authorities before booking. Our service does not assist with pet import paperwork, and we are not responsible if a pet is denied entry at the border.
- Large dogs and exotic animals cannot be accommodated on this route.
Visa and entry requirements
Most nationalities require a Cambodian visa to enter at Phnom Den. You have two options: apply in advance via the official Cambodian e-visa portal (recommended — costs USD 36, processed in 3 business days), or obtain a visa on arrival at the Phnom Den border gate (costs USD 30, bring exact USD cash + 1 recent passport photo). Vietnamese citizens and most ASEAN nationals are exempt — verify your status before travel. Our transfer pricing covers the driver, fuel, and road tolls only and does not include visa fees or immigration assistance. Please ensure your passport has at least 6 months of remaining validity and carries a valid Vietnamese entry stamp if you are not a Vietnamese citizen. We are not responsible for any issues at passport control or denial of entry.
Checklist for the border:
- Passport (6+ months validity)
- USD 30 cash (exact) + 1 passport photo — for visa on arrival
- Your Phnom Penh hotel address (required on the Cambodian arrival card)
- Printed or digital copy of your booking confirmation
- Pet health certificate, rabies vaccination record, and Cambodian import permit (if traveling with a pet)
FAQs
How long does the Can Tho to Phnom Penh private car transfer take?
The total journey is approximately 6.5 to 7 hours door-to-door. The drive from Can Tho to the Tinh Bien border takes around 2.5–3 hours, border processing at Tinh Bien / Phnom Den typically adds 30–60 minutes, and the drive from the Cambodian side into central Phnom Penh takes a further 2.5–3 hours. Traffic conditions and border queue length on the day can affect the total time.
Do the drivers speak English?
Honestly, English fluency is limited on this route — the Vietnamese driver typically has minimal English, and the Cambodian driver is usually a little more conversational, but neither should be expected to hold a full English discussion. In practice this is rarely a problem: pick-up, drop-off, rest stops, and border handover are all coordinated by our team in advance so the driver already knows your plan before he meets you. If anything comes up mid-journey — a detour, an unscheduled stop, a question about timing — just ping us on WhatsApp and we'll call the driver immediately to relay your request. We're reachable throughout the day for exactly this reason.
Do I need a visa to enter Cambodia at the Phnom Den border gate?
Most nationalities do. You can get a Cambodian visa on arrival at the Phnom Den gate for USD 30 (bring exact USD cash and one passport photo). Alternatively, apply online in advance at evisa.gov.kh for USD 36 — this avoids any queue at the visa window and is recommended during peak season. ASEAN citizens and a small number of other nationalities are exempt; check the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs list before you travel.
Can I request a child seat for my child?
Yes — child seats are available at no extra charge and must be requested at the time of booking. Let us know your child's age and weight so we can prepare the right seat type. Child seats are confirmed for the Vietnamese leg of the transfer; for the Cambodian leg, we will make every effort to arrange one but recommend confirming with us directly given that local vehicle availability may vary. Children count as full passengers toward the vehicle's capacity limit.
Can I bring my pet on the Can Tho to Phnom Penh transfer?
Small pets in a closed carrier or crate are permitted, provided you notify us at the time of booking. Undisclosed pets may be refused by the driver. More importantly, crossing the Vietnam–Cambodia border with a pet requires a veterinary health certificate, proof of rabies vaccination, and a Cambodian animal import permit — all arranged by you well in advance through the relevant government authorities. We do not assist with pet import paperwork and cannot be held responsible if your pet is denied entry at the border. We recommend contacting the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture and the Vietnamese Department of Animal Health several weeks before your travel date to confirm current requirements.
Why does the transfer use two vehicles instead of one?
Private cars are not permitted to cross the Vietnam-Cambodia border at Tinh Bien / Phnom Den. This is a regulation that applies to all private transfers on this route, regardless of which company you book with. Your first driver takes you from Can Tho to the Vietnamese immigration building; you then walk approximately 350 meters to the Cambodian side, where your second driver is already waiting with a name board. Both legs are 100% private — no shared passengers in either vehicle.
What time does the pick-up happen and what time will I arrive in Phnom Penh?
Pick-up from your hotel in Can Tho is typically between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. With an on-time departure and a normal border crossing, expect to arrive at your Phnom Penh hotel between 2:00 and 3:30 PM. If you have an early evening commitment in Phnom Penh, a 7:00 AM departure is strongly recommended. Confirm your preferred pick-up time when booking.
Is the Tinh Bien / Phnom Den border crossing easier than Moc Bai?
Yes — for most travelers, noticeably so. The Tinh Bien – Phnom Den crossing handles significantly lower tourist traffic volumes than Moc Bai – Bavet, which is used on the Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh route. This generally means shorter queues, faster processing, and a calmer overall experience. It is the border gate we use specifically for this reason.
Can I book a return trip — Phnom Penh to Can Tho by private car?
Yes. The reverse route,
Phnom Penh to Can Tho private car, is available and uses the same Phnom Den – Tinh Bien border crossing. You can book each direction separately, or contact us via WhatsApp to arrange both legs and confirm timing. If you're planning a round trip within a short window, let us know and we'll coordinate both drivers for you.
