What to Expect
A shore excursion day is unlike any other kind of tour. You are working within a hard deadline — your ship will not wait — and the drive from Phu My Port to Ho Chi Minh City takes between 90 minutes and two hours each way. That reality shapes everything, and a private driver-guide is the smartest way to work within it.
From the moment your driver-guide meets you at the port, they hold your all-aboard time as the fixed anchor of the day. Every stop, every decision, every piece of timing is built around making sure you are back at the ship gate with a comfortable buffer — never rushing, never cutting it fine.
Because this is a private tour, the itinerary is genuinely yours. The reference itinerary below covers Ho Chi Minh City's most significant landmarks across a full day, but if you want to focus on history, skip a stop, add a market visit, or spend longer somewhere, simply tell your driver-guide. They are with you all day and adjust around your preferences.
The vehicle is a private air-conditioned car — no strangers, no shared bus, no waiting for a group to reassemble. Just your people, your guide, and a day that moves at a pace you set.
This tour suits first-time visitors to Vietnam who want to make the most of a single port day, couples and families who prefer privacy over group dynamics, and anyone who values getting genuine depth from a short visit rather than a rushed checklist of photos.
What Is a Driver-Guide service?
A driver-guide is one person who does both jobs — they drive and they guide. No separate driver waiting in the car while a guide walks you around. No handover, no coordination between two people who barely know each other. Just one dedicated professional with you from pickup to drop-off.
Because it is one person handling everything, the day becomes genuinely flexible. Your driver-guide learns your pace early and adjusts around it. Want to stay longer somewhere? Just say so. Have a question on the road? Ask. There is no group schedule to catch up with, no microphone and earpiece, no waiting for strangers.
It is a simpler, more personal way to travel — and for small groups especially, it makes a quiet but significant difference to how the whole day feels.
Itinerary
Port Pickup - 7:00 – 7:30 AM: Phu My Port Gate
Your driver-guide meets you at the main gate of Phu My Port, holding a name board with your name clearly displayed. From your ship, make your way to the port gate — most passengers walk approximately 5 minutes or take the free port shuttle bus to the terminal exit. Your driver-guide will be waiting for you there. Please disembark and make your way to the gate as early as possible. The earlier you leave, the more time you have in the city.
See Pick-up / Drop-off Details section for full instructions and what to do on arrival.
Drive to Ho Chi Minh City - Approx. 7:30 – 9:30 AM
Travel by private air-conditioned vehicle along the expressway toward Ho Chi Minh City. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. Your driver-guide uses this time to introduce the city, its history, and what you will see — so by the time you arrive, you already have context.
Morning in Ho Chi Minh City - Approx. 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
The morning focuses on the colonial and wartime heart of Saigon. The exact order of stops may vary based on traffic and your preferences, but the reference morning itinerary covers:
- Chinatown (Cho Lon) & Binh Tay Market: Step into Ho Chi Minh City's vibrant Chinese district — a world of incense, colour, and commerce that has operated for centuries. Binh Tay Market is the beating heart of Cho Lon, filled with wholesale goods, spices, and local life that feels completely removed from the tourist trail.
- Thien Hau Temple: One of the most beautiful Chinese temples in Vietnam, dedicated to the goddess of the sea. Incense coils hang from the ceiling, worshippers move quietly through the smoke, and the courtyard offers a rare pocket of calm inside a loud city.
- War Remnants Museum: The most powerful museum in Vietnam, presenting the human cost of the Vietnam War through photography, military hardware, and firsthand testimony. Your driver-guide prepares you before you enter and is available throughout to provide context. Allow approximately 60 to 75 minutes here.
Lunch - Approx. 12:00 – 1:00 PM — Local Vietnamese Restaurant
A sit-down lunch at a locally recommended restaurant — a chance to rest, eat well, and recharge for the afternoon. Lunch cost is not included in the tour price and is paid directly by you.
Afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City - Approx. 1:00 – 3:30 PM
- Reunification Palace: The iconic symbol of the end of the Vietnam War — walk through the war rooms, the underground command bunker, and the rooftop helipad. The building has been preserved exactly as it was on 30 April 1975.
- Notre Dame Cathedral & Central Post Office: Two of the finest French colonial buildings in Southeast Asia, standing side by side. The Cathedral's twin red-brick towers and the Post Office's sweeping Eiffel-influenced interior are among the most photographed buildings in the city.
- Ben Thanh Market: One of Ho Chi Minh City's most recognisable landmarks — a covered market of food, souvenirs, clothing, and local goods. A good place for a final browse before heading back to the port.
Return to Phu My Port Depart city approx. 3:30 – 4:00 PM
Your driver-guide calculates the return departure time based on your confirmed all-aboard time, current traffic conditions, and a safety buffer of at least 45 to 60 minutes. You will never be cutting it close.
Arrive at Phu My Port Gate: approx. 5:00 – 5:30 PM: Your driver-guide delivers you to the port gate. From there, make your way back to your ship via the shuttle bus or on foot.
The itinerary above is a reference, not a fixed schedule. As a private tour, everything is flexible — simply talk to your driver-guide and adjust the day as you go. The one non-negotiable is your all-aboard time, which your driver-guide will protect throughout the day.
