Ha Giang is one of the most isolated provinces in Vietnam. The distance from Hanoi to Ha Giang is about 300 km.
(Map)
As Ha Giang is quite far from Hanoi, tourists may find it hard to decide the kind of transport to get there. To make it easiest for you, here are our top 4 recommendations.
Local bus: around $10-15 per ticket and around 10-12 hours.
Shuttle bus: $12 for a one-way ticket and $ 24 for a round-way one and around 6hours.
Motorbike: round $7-$15/day for rental fee and 3,5 days riding (time for resting, eating and sleeping included).
Limousine Van: $18 per ticket and around 6 hours.
The first way to travel from Hanoi to Ha Giang is by using a local bus. A bus is usually considered cheap and the most popular way.
However, you also should consider it carefully as the bus service in Vietnam has many drawbacks.
Apart from not being really private as you may have to travel on 40-50 people on the bus, on weekends or special occasions such as Tet or the independence day, most buses are stuffed with up to 200% of their capacity, which may be a not really pleasant experience.
Another minus point is that it may take quite a long time as the buses often stop occasionally on the road to pick up more travelers (even though it is illegal).
Lastly, there is only one bus station in Hanoi (known as My Dinh bus station) that provides a bus trip to Ha Giang.
This bus station is also in the west of Hanoi, quite far from most of hotels for foreign tourists in central districts. Therefore, it can be not easy as it seems to be!
But if you decide to take this option, then go to My Dinh bus station in Nam Tu Liem district. You can buy tickets at ticket stalls in the administration house in the station.
The price is about 200000-300000 VND (around $10-15) and it may take for 10-12 hours of constant moving.
When you reach Ha Giang city, you can book a taxi to your hotel or travel to other destinations in the province.
If you want to take a more comfortable and private choice, then taking a Shuttle Bus would be an ideal choice.
Shuttle Bus is a very modern and comfortable type of bus which provides you with what you will need during the trip and at the same time brings you as much convenience and comfort and possible.
The bed-seats are spacious and equipped with soft berths that guarantee you a cozy and comfortable time on the bus.
Besides, passengers can also enjoy the best services and amenities including two-way air conditioner, mineral water, television, wifi, and blankets.
There are also English speaking guide on the bus who will help you if you have any question or need some information about the places you are going to visit.
The bus provides both Hanoi - Ha Giang trip and Ha Giang - Hanoi trip so that you can easily get back to Hanoi.
The bus will pick you up at a particular location. Therefore, if you don’t stay near the pick-up location, it’s recommended to be on time.
Hanoi: Any hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter OR the default station at No 16 Hang Chinh street, Hanoi
Ha Giang: Ha Giang shuttle bus office – No 55 Minh Khai, Ha Giang.

It will take about 6 hours to get from Hanoi to Ha Giang but may vary according to the traffic condition.
The price is quite reasonable at $12 for a one-way ticket and $ 24 for a round-way one.
For rental, it’s relatively easy to spot motorbike stores in the Old Quarter or West Lake area with English-speaking staff or owners which offer various types of automatic, semi-automatic, manual, and touring bikes with monthly, weekly, and daily rental services.
The price may vary from store to store and depend on the type of motorbike you would like to rent but usually it takes around $7-$15/day (an amount of earnest money is often required).
However, riding a motorbike can quite dangerous in Vietnam as the traffic condition is really bad especially during rush hours and road quality is also not very good.
In addition, you may get into trouble with the police if you don’t have a license. Last but not least, it’s important to search for the route you would take in advance if you don’t want to get lost.
Finding the right road can be tedious if you’re a foreigner and getting lost can easily happen if you don’t pay close attention to the details on the map.
Ha Giang is also notorious for its deadly geographical features as it is full of sudden passes and extremely high roads.
Therefore, you should consider it carefully, especially if you don’t have much experience riding a motorbike or a motorbike license.
If you really want to take a motorbike trip, then you should start to decide which route to go. Here are two recommended routes for you:
The first route: Hanoi – Vinh Phuc – Viet Tri – Phu Tho – Tuyen Quang – Ha Giang.
The second route: Hanoi – Son Tay – Trung Ha bridge – Co Tiet – Phong Chau – Phu Thọ – Đoan Hung – Tuyen Quang – Ha Giang.
As the whole distance could be quite long ( around 300-320 km), it may take you up to 3,5 days riding (time for resting, eating, and sleeping included).
Therefore, if you don’t really have much time, try to opt for other options.
