Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) is the primary gateway to the world-famous Angkor Archaeological Park and the city of Siem Reap. Opened in late 2023, it is located approximately 45 to 50 kilometers east of the city center. This modern facility was built to replace the old airport to better protect the ancient temples from plane vibrations and to handle more international visitors. The airport features a beautiful design that blends modern technology with traditional Khmer architecture, offering a grand welcome to the Kingdom of Wonder.
Airport History and Structure
The new SAI airport officially opened in October 2023, representing a billion-dollar investment in Cambodia's tourism. It is currently the largest airport in the country, designed to handle up to 7 million passengers every year. Because it is located about 45-50km from the city, the journey to town takes roughly 60 minutes via a brand-new highway. The airport consists of one massive, high-tech terminal building that serves both domestic and international travelers. The structure is simple to navigate: Ground Floor (Level 0): This is the Arrivals area. After landing, you will walk through immigration, collect your luggage, and exit here to find your taxi or bus. First Floor (Level 1): This is the Departures area. This floor is where you will find check-in counters, duty-free shopping, restaurants, and the boarding gates for your flight out of Siem Reap.
Commonly Used Airport Services
The airport is equipped with international-standard facilities to help you stay connected and comfortable: Free Wi-Fi: High-speed internet is available throughout the terminal. Connect to the "SAI Free Wi-Fi" network on your smartphone. SIM Cards: You can find several kiosks from local providers like Smart or Cellcard just outside the Arrivals hall to buy a 4G/5G data plan. Currency Exchange & ATMs: Since Cambodia uses both US Dollars and Cambodian Riel, exchange booths and ATMs are conveniently located in the Arrivals area. Visa on Arrival: For many tourists, the Visa on Arrival counter is located right before the immigration desks. Baggage Services: Luggage wrapping stations are available in the Departure hall, and free trolleys are located throughout the building. Food & Shopping: The terminal features several cafes, traditional Khmer restaurants, and large duty-free shops selling local crafts and international brands.
Pro-Traveler Experience Tips
To make your trip to the temples even easier, follow these helpful tips: Plan for the Drive: Remember that the airport is much farther than the old one. It takes about 1 hour to reach your hotel, so do not book tours too close to your arrival time. Carry Some US Dollars: Most airport services and taxis prefer US Dollars in clean, crisp bills, though they also accept Cambodian Riel. Use the "e-Arrival" App: Cambodia now uses an electronic arrival card. Filling this out online before you land can save you a lot of time at immigration. Check the Weather: Siem Reap can be very hot or rainy. The walk from the plane to the terminal is often via air-conditioned bridges, but keep an umbrella ready for the walk to your taxi. Hydration: There are water refill stations inside the departure lounge. Bring an empty bottle to fill up after passing security.
