Techo International Airport (KTI) is the stunning new gateway to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Opened in late 2025, it is located about 26 kilometers south of the city center in Kandal Province. This massive, state-of-the-art airport replaced the old Phnom Penh International Airport to handle millions of more visitors. Designed by world-famous architects, it features a beautiful "grid shell" roof that looks like a giant golden canopy. It is currently the largest and most modern airport in Cambodia, offering a high-tech and "green" environment for travelers from all over the world.
Airport History and Structure
Construction of Techo International Airport began in 2020 to meet the growing needs of Cambodia’s tourism. It was officially inaugurated in October 2025. This $2.3 billion project is a "4F-class" airport, which means it can handle the world’s largest airplanes, like the Airbus A380. The airport is built to be "green," using natural light and solar energy to save power. The airport currently consists of one massive, five-story Passenger Terminal. The layout is very simple to follow: Ground Floor (Level 0): This is the Arrivals area. After you land, you will walk through immigration and collect your luggage here. This floor also has exits to taxis and buses. Upper Floors (Levels 1-4): These levels are for Departures, airline offices, and luxury lounges. The check-in counters are located in a huge hall under the main roof. SAT-1 Terminal: Many international flights use this satellite building, which is connected to the main terminal by a quick, automated underground train.
Commonly Used Airport Services
The new terminal is packed with modern services to help you stay connected: Free Wi-Fi: High-speed internet is available throughout the terminal. Look for the "Techo Airport Free Wi-Fi" network. SIM Cards: You can find several kiosks for local mobile networks like Smart or Cellcard right in the Arrivals hall on the Ground Floor. Banks and ATMs: Multiple ATMs are located near the exit doors. They accept both international cards (Visa/Mastercard) and local cards. Currency Exchange: Official exchange booths are located in the Arrivals area. You can change your money into US Dollars (USD) or Cambodian Riel (KHR). Tax Refund: If you are a tourist, the VAT refund counter is located in the Departures hall before you go through security. Baggage Services: Luggage wrapping stations are available near the check-in rows, and free trolleys are located everywhere.
Pro-Traveler Experience Tips
To make your journey perfect, keep these tips in mind: The Drive to Town: The new airport is farther than the old one. It takes about 45 to 60 minutes to reach downtown Phnom Penh, so plan your time carefully. E-Arrival Card: Cambodia now uses an electronic arrival system. You should fill this out online before you land to skip the long lines at immigration. Clean Cash: If you use US Dollars, ensure your bills are very clean and have no tears. Local shops and the airport might not accept damaged bills. Self Check-In: Use the "E-Check-In" kiosks in the Departure hall to print your own boarding pass and save time. Solar Power: Look at the "structural trees" holding up the roof—they are part of the airport's green design and make for a great photo!
