Located in the Tho Xuan District approximately 45 km from the Thanh Hoa city center, Tho Xuan Airport has successfully transitioned from its origins as a military airbase into a vital civilian domestic hub. The airport currently connects the region to major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang through carriers such as VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Bamboo Airways. Recent expansions have boosted its capacity to over 1.5 million passengers annually, introducing modern check-in counters, boarding gates, and upgraded waiting lounges, with future plans already in motion to develop international routes. Overall, it remains a small but efficiently run regional gateway that punches above its weight, offering a stress-free start to any Thanh Hoa adventure without the hassle of long queues or confusing terminals.

Initially, in 1965, the airport was built to expand the air front of the 923rd Air Regiment into Southern Military Region 4, directly managed by the 923rd Fighter-Bomber Regiment. During that period, the airport was called Sao Vang Airport, a Class I military airport in Vietnam.
It wasn't until February 5, 2013, after the first civilian flight from Ho Chi Minh City landed at Tho Xuan Airport, that the airport officially began serving both military and civilian purposes.
Currently, Tho Xuan Airport only operates domestic flights; however, in the future, the airport plans to expand to include international routes.
The structure and infrastructure of Tho Xuan Airport include: runways, aircraft parking areas, and passenger terminals.
