However, given the short distance, you may not have enough time to fully appreciate the stunning scenery from above. Additionally, the seaplane service tends to be fully booked most of the time, so it's advisable to plan your trip well in advance.

2. Transfer with a transition in Hanoi

If you're traveling on a budget and concerned about costs, transferring from Hanoi Airport to Halong Bay with a stopover in Hanoi might be the best option. This way is generally more economical than a direct transfer, particularly if you’re traveling alone or in a group of two.

First, you'll need to travel from Hanoi Airport to Hanoi City, which you can do via public bus or taxi. From Hanoi, you can then proceed to Halong Bay using either a limousine van or a local bus. The total travel time ranges from 4 to 8 hours, depending on your chosen mode of transportation.

2.1. 1st track - Getting from Hanoi Airport to Hanoi City Center

For this track, you can either opt in for Express Bus, Taxi or a Private Transfer.

2.1.1. Express Bus Route 86

Bus No. 86 operates daily between Hanoi Airport and Hanoi City, providing a convenient option for travelers. The buses run from 5 AM to 10 PM, with a bus departing approximately every 45 minutes. Travelers can easily head outside the arrival hall and wait for the bus.

Pick-up Points: 

• Bus stop outside the Arrival Hall on the first floor of both Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2).

Drop-off Points:

• The Old Quarter: Near the Hanoi Post Office and Hoan Kiem Lake.
• Hanoi Train Station: 137 Lê Duẩn Street, Hanoi.

Travel Time: Approximately 1.5 hours.

Ticket Price: VND 50,000 (about USD 2).

2.2.2. Local Coach from Hanoi to Halong Bay

Taking the bus is the cheapest option for traveling from Hanoi to Halong Bay, allowing you to save a significant amount of money, with fares ranging from USD 6 to 10 per person. However, this cost-effectiveness comes with some drawbacks. The journey can be quite time-consuming, taking 4 to 4.5 hours, as the bus frequently stops to pick up additional passengers. Additionally, during holidays, the buses can become very crowded as many people travel to their hometowns. The bus driver typically only speaks Vietnamese, which means you'll need to navigate a language barrier.

Unlike a limousine van that offers convenient pick-up and drop-off services, the local bus only transfers you between bus stations, which may require extra time and fare to get to and from the stations, ultimately increasing your overall costs.

2.3. Train from Hanoi to Halong

The Hanoi - Halong train, which runs from Yen Vien Railway Station to Halong Railway Station, was upgraded in 2017 to reach a designed speed of up to 120 km/h. However, due to the station's location far from the city center and the low operational speed (caused by old locomotives), train transportation on the Hanoi-Halong route has not been popular. Moreover, the train service was temporarily suspended in early 2020 due to the impact of the Covid pandemic, and as of now (updated October 2024), it has not yet resumed.
